GZ/GZIP

GZ or GZip is an old archive file type commonly used in Unix/Linux enviornments. The GZip file format can support archiving of multiple files although its most popular usage is as a compressed container for a single file.

The most common usage for the GZip file format is in conjunction with TAR containers in a Unix enviornment. Usually multiple files are packaged together into one TAR container and then the TAR container is compressed into a GZip file. Such files use the common file extension .tat.gz
