ISO/CD

ISO CD/DVD files are disk images of CDs or DVDs. ISO files are used in conjunction with ripping or burning such media. ISO files can also be used as a virtual CD or DVD for example an ISO file can be mounted as a virtual CD drive.

ISO is not a proper compression method but in many ways is similar to the TAR format optimized to packaging the representing data stored on physical CD or DVD media.
